The Great Gatsby Essay
The Great Gatsby Essay
In this essay I will talk about how Gatsby's desire for success is evidence of obsession is not really the "American Dream." There are many points in the novel that prove it is. Gatsby was trying too hard to achieve his dream. His dream was to get Daisy to love him and it proved too much for him. I do also think that Gatsby somewhat symbolizes our culture today.
Gatsby's desire for success in this novel is somewhat the American Dream because he does work very hard for what he wants and also has the equal opportunity as other people but, he works harder than other to get what he really wants in his life, which is to make Daisy fall in love with him again. what Gatsby does to achieve his dream is buying a big house that is across the bay from her and throwing huge parties every week hoping that one day she will wonder into one of his parties so they can meet again. This is also an obsession because he spent most of his money on just to impress her which he does but, that's not what she really wants. He failed at this because his obsession of him chasing his dream led to his own death.
Does Gatsby symbolize our culture today or is he an outlier? Well I believe that Gatsby does symbolize our culture today because many people these days have dreams that are very hard to achieve but, are achievable if you hard enough. Many people have dreams which requires to sacrifice a lot of things. In Gatsby's situation, there are many obstacles he has to get around to get where he wants to be at. People these days work very hard to achieve what they really want in life, and Gatsby is a very good example of that and he actually takes to the next level by leading himself to his own death.
All in all, Gatsby's desire for success is an obsession because of the amount of things he had to in order to achieve it and plus it leading him to death. And Gatsby does symbolize our culture today by doing what any other American wants to do in life.
